Century wins RASCL 2012 City Cup
The 2012 Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League (RASCL) City Cup Tournament was held at Century High School the 2011 defending Cup Champion on Saturday March 17. Century came into the meet as the second seed and played Lourdes High School in the semi-final round. Century advanced to the championship with a 3 ½ – 1 ½ win. Mayo / Stewartville, the 2012 regular season champions took advantage of their higher seed, to advance after a 2 ½ – 2 ½ draw against John Marshall High School.
However, Century refused to relinquish the Cup and prevailed 3-2 in the championship round against Mayo / Stewartville. Century varsity members included junior co-captain Michael Ekker, Enoch Tan, Gregory Nathan, sophomore Rory Li and Richard Huang a Kellogg sixth grader.
The 2012 RASCL “All League” Team was announced at the awards ceremony. Players include Maor Leker-Locker (Mayo), Michael Stageberg (Stewartville), Alex Gowan-Nuehring (Lourdes), Alex Cheng (John Marshall) and Michael Ekker (Century).
Two junior varsity players were awarded trophies for their consistent participation and achievement. They are Nick Johnson (Lourdes) and Nhi Huynh (John Adams).
Players and teams now turn their focus to the 2012 Minnesota Chess Association State Tournament which will be held March 31-April 1 at the Crowne Plaza in St. Paul.
Regular Season Standings
The Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League has completed its 2012 regular season schedule. Below you will find the team and individual standings based on six games (each team played each other team home and away). Teams earn 1 point for a win and ½ point for a draw. Each high school team fields five varsity players on boards numbered 1 through 5. The top player is on board # 1 and then on down. Players receive 10 “points” toward individual standings for a win on board # 1, 9 points board # 2, 8 from board # 3 etc. A draw splits the points between the two players.
There is a “combined” team consisting of players representing both Stewartville and Mayo HS. They are the 2012 RASCL regular season champions. They will now have the “top seed” in the 2012 RASCL City Cup Tournament. The tournament will be held at the Century north cafeteria this Saturday March 17 from 9:00 AM until around 1:30 PM. There are two rounds of play. First place team vs fourth place and second place vs third place in the semifinals. The winners then play in the finals. The higher seed is the “home team” meaning the players on boards # 1, 3 & 5 are white. Each player is given 60 minutes total for all moves so games might last over two hours.
After the RASCL City Cup the Minnesota State Chess Association state chess tournament will be held Saturday March 31 & Sunday April 1 at the Crowne Plaza in St. Paul. Players from K-12 will be participating in this United States Chess Federation open tournament which awards both team and individual trophies. Many players from Rochester will participate.
On April 9-11 the United States Chess Federation will have the 2012 Senior HS National Tournament at the Crowne Plaza in Minneapolis. Many Rochester players will also be participating in that.
For more information contact Chuck Handlon the RASCL Secretary/Treasurer. Thank you for your time and consideration. We hope to see you Saturday.
