David's Games - December 2021: Nels Tru
https://lichess.org/study/DZA
Annotated by https://lichess.org/@/dmac91
I believe Nels and I actually played online for TCCL several months back with the same colors, which black was able to win in a rook ending, and this game he deviated on move 12 and played a better move for white. This is a fairly wild line of the Two Knights defense, but is actually basically “known” (if you know it!) up until around move 15, when a dynamic position is reached where white is up a pawn with better structure, but black has active chances and it is still a very rich position despite no queens on the board and the unusual imbalance! Some of the opening comments quoted here are taken from Lichess referencing a Nunn openings book, just to give some background.1.e4e52.Nf3Nc63.Bc4Nf64.Ng5d55.exd5b5!?“The defining move for the Ulvestad Variation. Black challenges the strong bishop on c4 by offering a pawn.”6.Bf1!“A strange looking move, undeveloping the Bishop, however White wisely retreats the Bishop as tactics advantage still remain on b5.”6.Bxb5?Qxd57.Nc3Qxg28.Qf3Qxf39.Nxf3Bd7and black has equalized with a pretty comfortable position and development ideas to come.6…Nd47.c3Nxd5!black gives up some material and castling, but gets active play.8.cxd4Qxg59.Bxb5+Kd810.O-OBb711.Qf3!Looks scary but white is just in time to effectively parry the mate threats.11…Rb8!Black is in time to continue creating threats, too!12.dxe5!12.Nc312. Nc3 is what Nels played in our online game, but white has only equality at most with best play after 12…exd4 by black. The game move here is much more challenging and gives white chances to retain an advantage.12…Ne3!13.Qh3Qxg2+14.Qxg2Nxg215.d4The dust has settled a little bit. Black is going to have some opportunities for play on white’s light squares; white is going to try to develop and consolidate.15…Be716.f3!?White tries to shut down light-squared play.16.f4Nh417.Be2Nf5Is another try, though black will probably win the d4 pawn and equalize.16.Nc3Things can get scary for white if they are not careful.16…Nh417.Be2?!Nf3+18.Bxf3Bxf319.Re1Rb6!black has a grip on the light squares and good winning chances / at least equal.16…Nh417.Be2Nf5black tries to reroute the knight in time to cause white problems and also prepares an attacking idea in the moves to come.17…f6would have been another try for black18.Be3fxe519.dxe5Rf820.Nd2Rf521.f4Ng222.Bxa7Ra8with a very complicated position!18.Rd1g5?!objectively, this move would be better if white’s pawn were on f4 not f3, but black sticks to the mantra of active/fighting play above all and tries to create further imbalances for more chances!19.Nc3Rg8black sticks to the plan, the white king must be opened up at all costs!20.Kf220.Rb1!?preparing b4 is a very hard idea to see, especially with black attacking on the kingside, but could have offered white more chances.20…g420…h5!playing this first would have been better.21.Ne4g422.d5?!black was worried about this position, but apparently is OK and even better after:22…gxf323.Bxf3Bh4+24.Ke2Ba6+25.Kd2Nd426.Bxh5Rg2+27.Kc3Nb5+28.Kb4Nd6+29.Ka3Nxe430.Bf3Nc3!31.bxc3Rc2!32.Bd2Bf233.d6Bc5+34.Ka4Bb5+35.Ka535.Kb3??Rb2+!36.Kxb2Bd3+37.Bb7Rxb7+38.Kc1Ba3#35…Bd7!36.dxc7+Kxc7and somehow white is hanging on for now, but black clearly has mating chances and is better.21.fxg4Bh4+22.Kf122.Kg1This is such a hard move to play, but apparently white is better and can just sit tight.22…h5this was black’s idea, because if the knight is taken black has at least a perpetual and maybe more.23.d523.gxf5?!Bg2+24.Kg1Bf3+25.Kf1Bg2+26.Kg1=23.Bd3!Nxd424.Be2!c525.Nb5!I have no idea how white is supposed to find this as a human, but apparently it offers good chances to keep the edge.23…hxg424.Bf4?!24.Kg1!!g325.h3!Bc826.e6Be727.Ne4and white is somehow keeping the advantage, rebuffing black’s attack.24…g325.hxg3Bxg325…Nxg3+!?26.Bxg3Bxg3This might have been a better try for black, going after the e5 pawn. The following is not forced but is an example:27.e6fxe628.dxe6+Ke729.Bc4Rbf8+and black will be slightly better after winning the exchange despite the e6 pawn.26.Bxg3Nxg3+27.Kf2Here black was ahead :15 vs. :13 for white remaining, and spent 14 minutes trying to find something better than Nxe2 but could not do so.27…Nxe227…Ke7?28.Bf3!±28.Nxe2Ba6black was eager to remove the Ne2, but Rg5 would have been better.28…Rg529.e6Rf5+30.Ke1Bxd531.exf7Ke7=29.b329.Rd2!?This could have been an interesting try.29…Bxe2black has to take, otherwise the knight may come to d4 with devastating consequences.29…Rb630.Nd4!30.Kxe2Rg5Now the game peters out to a draw because black’s active rooks are just enough compensation to round up the pawns, or to cause white’s king problems.31.e6Re5+32.Kf3fxe633.dxe6+Ke734.Rd7+Kxe635.Rxc7Rf8+36.Kg4Re4+37.Kg3Re3+38.Kg4Re4+Draw agreed, 1/2-1/2. If white tries to run to the first rank with the king, black can always double on the 2nd and force the draw that way. A just result for a fighting game by both sides, where both tried different ways to win in an imbalanced, active position!
