For coach, chess is more than a game

The chess program in the Newcomer Center at Willow Creek Middle School is known for its success in helping immigrant students learn English, make friends and adjust to school life in Rochester.A key reason for its success is Jim Huerter. The paraprofessional and chess expert, who has worked in the Newcomer Center for about six years, teaches kids more than just excellent chess skills. He uses his passion for the game to teach patience, responsibility, focus and grace.
