RESULTS OF THE APRIL SCHOLASTIC SWISS ARE IN!

Forty-two students participated in the USCF-rated April Scholastic Swiss on April 12 in the Mayo Clinic Harwick Cafeteria. The high school section ended a three-way tie for first place with Calder Nguyen, Cole Lappi, and Johan Myburg scoring 3 wins and 1 loss. The winners are all members of the Century High School team which finished tied for first place in the 2025 Minnesota State High School Championship.

Luke Sellon (8th grade, John Adams) won the middle school section with a score of 3.5-0.5. Luke will be headed to Mayo High School next year. Luke played on the Mayo High School team which finished in first place in the 2024-2025 regular season of the Rochester Area Scholastic Chess League. Akhshar Vijayakumar (Byron, 6th grade) and Arthur Chen (Willow Creek, 6th grade) tied for second place with scores of 3-1, losing only to Judah Rigles (Kellogg, 8th grade).

Logan Anderson (Ben Franklin, 5th grade) won the elementary school section with a perfect 4-0 score. Close behind, tied for 2nd place, were Kaan Demirci (Lincoln K-8, 5th grade), Claire Niu (Jefferson, 4th grade), and Chris Gorcznski (Chatfield, 5th grade), all with 3 points.

The K-2 section was won by Micha Cook (Rochester Central Lutheran, 2nd grade) with a perfect 4-0 score. Micha was closely followed in 2nd place with 3 points by Moksh Patel (Lincoln, 1st grade), Mia Zhang (Schaeffer Academy, 1st grade) and Henry Beam (Lincoln, 1st grade).

Congratulations to all of the participants for playing chess all day with like-minded students. You are all winners!

Thanks to the coaches Master Thompson, Kevin Gaustad, Matt Markland, Roy Truelson, and Chuck Handlon for volunteering to help make the tournament possible. Also, thanks to the numerous parent volunteers for their assistance.

  1. Free, Weekly USCF-Rated Slow Swiss Tournament starts on Tuesday, April 8. One game per week (G/60+30s). Games start at 6:30 PM. Casual chess and kids are welcome. Doors open at 6:00 PM.
  2. Free Casual Chess at Novios Cafe on Thursday, April 10, 1 – 3 PM.
  3. Free Scholastic Swiss Tournament on Saturday, April 12, 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM. All grades. Four rounds of Game/30, d5s in a Swiss Style format.  

APRIL USCF-RATED SLOW SWISS: Three rounds of Game/60+30s increment in a Swiss or quad format beginning on Tuesday, April 8. One game per week. Chess sets and clocks will be provided. Half-point byes are available for schedule conflicts.
