WARM-UP FOR THE 132nd MINNESOTA OPEN!

Hone your chess skills in preparation for the Minnesota Open which will be held on February 14 – 16 at Bethel University. The Minnesota Open is the Granddaddy of competitive chess in Minnesota. 270+ players are expected to participate this year in one of five sections. Jai Knuth and others asked Rochester Chess to help local folks prepare the Minnesota Open. We responded by organizing a warm-up 3-round, USCF-rated tournament of G/60 + 30s increment beginning on Tuesday, January 28. One game per night will be played for 3 consecutive weeks.

The K-2 section will be unrated. All other sections (elementary school K-5, middle school K-8 and high school K-12) will be rated by USCF and require a USCF membership to participate https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess. Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top finishers

Four rounds of Game/30, d5s in a Swiss Style format will be played on January 11. All participants will play 4 games.  No elimination. Participating in the K-12 sections requires a USCF membership (https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess). The K-2 section will be unrated. Chess sets and clocks will be provided. Half-point byes are available for schedule conflicts.

Trophies/medals will be awarded to the top finishers in each section K-2 (unrated), GRADES K-5, GRADES K-8, and GRADES K-12.

Site: Mayo Clinic Harwick Cafeteria, 201 Third Ave. SW, Rochester, MN. Online pre-registration is required to reserve your spot in the tournament.   Participation will be limited to the first 50 registrants. 

Schedule for the USCF-rated sections:

Check in with the tournament director by 9:15 – 9:45 AM to confirm your participation:
Round 1: 10:00 AM
Round 2: 11:10 AM
Lunch Break: Immediately after your round 2 game ends (on your own).
Round 3: 1:00 PM
Round 4: 2:10 PM

Awards following Round 4 at about 3:30 PM.

Schedule for the grades K-2 unrated section:

Check in with the tournament director by 11:45 AM.
Round 1: 12:10 PM
Round 2: 12:50 PM
Round 3: 1:30 PM
Round 4: 2:10 PM
Awards at about 3:00 PM  

ROCHESTER CHESS CLUB WILL NOT BE MEETING ON DECEMBER 24 AND 31. THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON JANUARY 7, 2025.
