ROCHESTER CHESS NEWS
On October 11, 2025, fifty K-8 students competed in the National Chess Day Scholastic Tournament in the Northrop Community Education Center. Rochester Community Education and Rochester Chess cosponsored the event. Matt Markland expertly directed the competition and numerous volunteers helped the event run smoothly.
Trophies were awarded to the top 6 finishers in each section. Other participants received medals.

Tuesday, October 14: Free Chess Class for Adults and Children, 5 – 6 PM.
Game analysis session part 2. Bring a copy of an interesting game that you would like to share with the group. Casual chess and kids are welcome. Doors open at 6 PM.
Thursday, October 16: Free senior chess at Novios, 1 – 3 PM https://www.novioscafe.com/. Free casual chess at Jersey Jo’s, 4 – 6 PM https://www.jerseyjos.com/.
The Minnesota Chess Class Championships return to Rochester on November 15-16! Compete with your peers! The Class Champs is a unique event that closely groups players by rating. Three spots for the 2026 Closed State Championship Playoffs are on the line! The tournament will be held in the Mayo Clinic Harwick Cafeteria, 205 3rd Avenue SW, Rochester. RESULTS OF THE SLOW SWISS WARM UP
Twenty-two players from Rochester and the surrounding area played in a slow swiss tournament to warm up for the Rochester Open. Young players dominated in the upper section which ended in a tie for first place between Calder Nguyen and Cole Lappi. Both are members of the Century High School Chess Team.
Steve Lange finished in first place in the swiss 2 section by winning his games in round 2 and 3 after taking a half-point bye in the first round.

Next week’s meeting (July 15) will feature a game analysis session in which players present their favorite games. Also, we will have casual chess and as always kids are welcome.
