ROCHESTER CHESS NEWS.

The free RCC December 2025 Scholastic Chess Tournament was held on December 6 in the Mayo Clinic Harwick Building. Thirty-four students participated in three sections. The tournament was expertly directed by TD Matt Markland. Numerous coaches analyzed games with the players between rounds. Thanks to Shanti and Scott for their assistance in the K2 section.

Henry Beam, second grade at Lincoln, finished in first place with at perfect score of 4-0 in the K2 unrated section.

Richard Luseni, a sophomore at Century High School, finished in first place in his first USCF-rated chess tournament in the lower rated section with a perfect score of 4-0. Joseph Bell, a senior at Lourdes High School, finished in first place in the upper rated section with a perfect score of 4-0. Congratulations to the winners. Tuesday, December 9: Free chess camp led by Coach Lucas, 5 – 6 PM.

Round 2 of the Winter Slow Swiss. Four rounds of Game/60+30s increment in a Swiss format will be played on Tuesdays, December 2, 9, 16 and January 6.  Games begin at 6:30 PM.

Casual chess and kids chess 6 – 9 PM.

Thursday, December 11: Free senior chess at Novios, 1 – 3 PM https://www.novioscafe.com/. Free casual chess at Jersey Jo’s, 4 – 6 PM https://www.jerseyjos.com/.

Tuesday, December 2: 

Free chess class for adults and children by Coach Lucas, 5 – 6 PM at the Harwick.

Round 1 of the Winter Slow Swiss: Four rounds of Game/60+30s increment in a Swiss format will be played on Tuesdays, December 2, 9, 16 and January 6. Membership in USCF is required (https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess). Games start at 6:30 PM. Half-point byes are available for schedule conflicts. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each section. TD Matt Markland will be playing and directing. Saturday, December 6:

Free scholastic (K12) USCF-rated swiss tournament. Directed by Matt Markland. Four rounds of G/30, d5. Coaches will be available to analyze games between rounds. Parent volunteers are needed to help set up the site and to monitor the door. Contact Dennis Mays (dennismays101@gmail.com) for more information. 

Trophies/medals will be awarded to the top finishers in each section.

Check in with the tournament director by 9:15 – 9:45 AM to confirm your participation:
Round 1: 10:00 AM
Round 2: 11:10 AM
Lunch Break: Immediately after your round 2 game ends (on your own).
Round 3: 1:00 PM
Round 4: 2:10 PM

Awards following Round 4 at about 3:30 PM.
