Two Things: Mini Chess Camp Saturday, May 26, 9 AM – Noon in the Harwick Cafeteria for Youth and Adults. Round 2 Slow Starts at 6:30 PM.

National Chess Master Matt Jensen and I will be holding a mini chess camp on Saturday, May 26, 9 AM – noon in the Harwick cafeteria for youth and adults. The fee is $15 per registrant; $20 for two or more in a family. Courtesy of grants from Mayo Clinic and the Rochester Area Foundation, full scholarships are available for  underserved youth. Topics include opening principles, tactics, and endgames you must know by heart. We plan on dividing the camp in to two or more sections according to playing level.

The President’s Cup

An RCTC Math Department and Rochester Chess Club Community Chess Tournament

Saturday, December 16, 10 AM – 5 PM in the RCTC Cafeteria

RCTC will be hosting the President’s Cup, a community chess tournament, on Saturday, December 16, 2017. RCTC and Student Life, respectively, have generously provided the space and chess equipment for this event. Additional funding is provided by a youth enrichment grant to Rochester Chess from the Mayo Clinic Office of Community Relations. The tournament has three sections, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. All sections are unrated. Intermediate and Advanced players will be required to record their games. Instruction will be provided if needed. All participants will play 4 games (no elimination). Participants may request up to two ½-point byes for rounds they cannot play.  Read More…

Scholastic State Championship

Maor Leker Locker tied for first in the Minnesota K-12 Championship!!  Coach Chuck Handlon helped get the word out and here’s a press release:  http://krocam.com/century-sophomore-is-state-chess-co-champion/

RCC Alum Daniel Lekah also tied for first in K-12 with 5 of 6

Richard Huang — Tied 6th K-9 (8th after tiebreaks) with 4.5 of 6

Ben Schimke — Tied 12th K-9 with 4 of 6 (many players with 4)

Maor Leker Locker and Rob Newshutz tied for first place in the Open section.  Results.  Michael Kern won the U1600.  2014 Grand Prix standings.

TCCL

The Gold team won their match and is now sitting in 6th place.  Silver lost to one of the top teams and will stay in the Silver division for next year.  Full results.
