Celebrate National Chess Day in Style by Playing in the Rochester Scholastic Chess Tournament (Gr. K-8) on Saturday, October 14!
Let’s Play Chess!
Celebrate National Chess Day by participating in the largest youth chess tournament in Rochester. Students can expect a supportive environment with instruction from experienced chess players and high school role models. Students will be paired with others of similar skill level, and they do not need previous experience participating in a chess event. This opportunity is presented in partnership by Rochester Chess and Rochester Community Education.
All Experience Levels Welcome
Any student in grades K-8 may participate. Participants will play in one of three divisions.
- Beginner (Grades K-2): Afternoon only. If you understand how to move the pieces, you are ready to have fun and play chess with other kids.
- Novice (Grades 3-8): Students will be paired with students of a similar skill level. This division may be a good fit for students who have not previously competed in a chess event.
- Advanced (Grades K-8): Tournament results will be rated by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). A USCF membership is required and can be purchased on their website for $20. Players in the Advanced section will be required to record their moves. Scholarships for USCF memberships are available. Contact Dennis Mays for more information: dennismays101@gmail.com
Register early as the tournament is capped at a limited number of participants. https://rochester.ce.eleyo.com/course/19830/2023-fall-youth/rochester-scholastic-chess-tournament-gr-k-8

ROUND 2 PAIRINGS IN THE SUMMER CLASSICAL
Note games in the double round robin quads can be played in any order. Rescheduled games must be played on September 12 or 19. All games start at 6:45 PM or earlier if opponents agree. It is not too late to join the swiss section. Just let me know before Tuesday, August 8.

SWISS PARTICIPANTS AND PAIRINGS

CLASSICAL CHESS TOURNAMENT BEGINS ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 1
Rochester Chess will continue USCF-rated classical chess in round robin quads and a mini swiss at a time control of G/60; 30-second delay. Participants who are available to play 6 games have been seeded in a double round robin quad, one game with white and one game with black (one game per week). A mini-swiss of 4+ rounds has been added for players who cannot commit to playing 6 games or registered late.
Below are the sections for the classical chess tournament that will start on Tuesday, August 1 at the club. The time control is G/60; 30-second delay. Quad games begin at 6:45 PM. Late joiners will be added to the swiss section. Swiss games will start at 7 PM. Check in by 6:45 to play in the swiss. Players who arrive later will receive a half-point bye for round 1.
Rescheduled games should be played at the club on September 12 or 19 so that a TD can be present.
If you are unable to play, please let your opponent and me know. This respect is key for the success of the event.
